Who would have thought...
Chinese people and Halloween.
It's hard to make the connection but if you look hard enough, it makes sense why Chinese people would love Halloween.
Most Costumes are Made in China
Most off-the-shelf costumes are made in China (especially the one-piece plastic ones for kids). During Halloween, you sell a lot of costumes and when you sell a lot of costumes, you make a lot of money.
Chinese people love making money.
That's one of the reasons why Chinese people love Halloween.
We Love Free Stuff
Chinese people can't resist free stuff. (Click this if you don't know why)
During Halloween, everyone (homes, stores, restaurants, etc.) is giving something for free - candy, real food and even small change.
To be fair, there are a lot of other cultures and nationalities that love free stuff but we Chinese people really love it.
I think Halloween is really the only holiday where everyone goes around asking for free stuff and actually get it.
Another Excuse to Get Crazy
Western holidays like Valentine's day and Christmas have really gained traction in China. They are consumer holidays (See reason #1) and they give Chinese people a reason to celebrate something.
Halloween has all of the same qualities and one extra one: anonymity. When you dress up and you can't be recognized, you have the opportunity to really let loose. Guys who would never go up to a girl at a bar, do so. Girls who would never go out with funky make up, do so.
During Halloween, the craziness is understood and accepted maybe because it's only for one day/night.
If you've ever been to China, you know that Chinese people love to party any time they can. Halloween gives them the perfect excuse to do so. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese people start combining Halloween with Karaoke where people dress up as their favorite singers and sing their songs at Karaoke bars.
Actually, this probably already happens.
So there you have it - a few reasons why Chinese people love Halloween - money, free stuff and an excuse getting crazy.
