The #1 Complaint in Hong Kong

"We're not going to take it."

Almost all of Hong Kong has one complaint.

It's not the hot and humid summers.

It's not the swarms of filipino house maids roaming the streets on the weekends.

It's not even the fact that all of these non-HK residents are going back to Hong Kong to take advantage of Scheme $6,000.

What people in Hong Kong have a real issue with is ...

... the huge influx of Chinese mainlanders into Hong Kong.

So why do Hong Kong people dislike Mainland Chinese people?

(Keep in mind that these are stereotypes and does not apply to all Mainland Chinese people or Hong Kong people. As with all stereotypes, there is some truth in it.)

They are Rude

Mainland Chinese people are rude. They push to get their way. They speak loudly. It happens in Mainland China. It happens in Hong Kong. It happens in the US.

The Don't Follow the Rules

They spit whenever and wherever they want to. They have been seen peeing on the streets. They don't wait on line. This is tough for HK citizens to stand because they pride themselves on efficiency and following the rules. It's no wonder they get so annoyed at Mainland Chinese people.

They Take Benefits Away from HK Citizens

The complaint I hear the most is the one about pregnant Mainland Chinese women who hide their baby bump in order to get on the train to HK. Once they are in HK or en route to HK, they go into labor. The complaint is not only about the baby's safety but also about taking up benefits and resources that should be allocated to HK citizens.

In addition to the poor Mainland Chinese people taking advantage of benefits, the rich Mainlanders are driving up the cost of real estate and other goods. They act like they own the place (I guess because they somewhat do or at least think they do). The citizens of Hong Kong are being squeezed in between and they don't like it.

The people in Mainland China are NOT trying to be annoying or rude. They just don't know any better. They are acting the way they've always acted just out of context. It's the same everywhere you go. New immigrants always clash with the old (ABCs vs FOBs). People are simply acting out of ignorance on both sides.

If you support the HK side, imagine yourself as a Mainland Chinese person:

You grew up in a poor family with no future prospects or connections and jumping on a train to HK means a better life for your unborn child. Would you just stay put or would you do whatever you can to get on that train.

For those who support Mainland China, imagine yourself as a citizen of HK:

You were born and raised in China. You paid taxes there all your life and have been with Hong Kong for the good times and the bad. You're about to have your first child and when you get to the hospital, they tell you the hospital is full because 35 Mainland Chinese women decided to sneak onto a train so they can have their baby in HK.

In life, there are no right or wrong answers.

It's just about figuring out how to make it work.
